Common Pool Mistakes Beginners Make (And How to Fix Them)
Everyone makes mistakes when they start playing pool. Even professional players made these same mistakes when they were beginners! The good news? Every mistake is a chance to learn.
Here are the most common mistakes and how to fix them.
Mistake 1: Hitting the Ball Way Too Hard
Many beginners think power is everything. They hit the white ball as hard as they can. But this actually makes the game harder! When you hit too hard, you lose control.
Fix: Use about half of the maximum power. Imagine you're gently pushing the ball, not hitting it.
Mistake 2: Not Watching the White Ball After Shooting
After you shoot, do you look away? Many beginners do! But watching the white ball helps you understand how it moves.
Fix: Follow the white ball with your eyes until it stops moving. This helps you learn how the table works.
Mistake 3: Trying Difficult Shots Too Early
When you're new, stick to simple shots. Don't try to bounce the ball off three walls and hit a tiny target. Start with straight shots and easy angles.
Fix: In our game, the white aiming line shows you the path. If the line doesn't point near a pocket, try a different ball! Learn to read that line in our guide to aiming pool shots.
Mistake 4: Not Taking Your Time
There's no clock rushing you (well, there's a 20-second timer, but that's plenty of time!). Take a deep breath, look at your target, and then shoot.
Fix: Before each shot, count to 3 in your head. Look at the target ball. Look at the pocket. Then shoot.
Mistake 5: Forgetting About the 8-Ball
The 8-ball is the black ball with number 8. Remember: you can only pocket it AFTER you've pocketed all your other balls. Hitting it too early loses the game!
Fix: Always check which balls are yours and which are the opponent's. The game shows you clearly. Reviewing the 15 ball pool rules will keep you from losing on the 8-ball.
Mistake 6: Giving Up Too Quickly
Pool is a game of ups and downs. Sometimes you'll miss easy shots. Sometimes your opponent will get lucky. Don't give up! Keep trying and you'll improve.
Fix: Every game is practice. Even when you lose, you're learning. The more you play, the better you get!
Why do I keep missing easy shots?
You might be rushing or hitting too hard. Slow down, aim carefully, and use gentle power.
How long does it take to get good at pool?
Everyone is different. Some people improve in a few days, others take weeks. The key is to practice a little bit every day.
What is the most common mistake beginners make in pool?
Hitting the ball way too hard. Beginners often think power is everything, but gentle control aimed at the pocket is far more effective.
Can I lose at 15 ball pool by pocketing the 8-ball too early?
Yes. The 8-ball must be pocketed last, after clearing all the balls in your group. Pocketing it early loses the game.
